Like a fish out of water

The city of Ostend

The seaside is synonymous with sun, beaches and fresh fish. Stad Oostende wanted to create extra awareness around the Vistrap, where fish is hauled every morning from the night before. A shorter supply chain is barely unthinkable. With that briefing in mind, our concept team thought big. How can we go back in time and tell the story about the night before? How does a giant interactive eyecatcher in the shape of a shrimp to lure passers-by into the Vistrap sound?

Larger than life shrimp

And so it happened. Our designers created a larger-than-life installation of almost 3 metres high that not only catches the attention of visitors but also tells the story of the Vistrap by one simple gesture, turning a wheel to take them back into time. Because that’s the main takeaway, the fish that arrives in the Vistrap is as fresh as it gets.

This project involved a close collaboration between our design team, the engineering team and the workshop team. As it’s a permanent installation at the seaside, the metal structure needs to withstand extreme weather conditions (and corrosion due to salt) and also be sturdy. The shrimp’s body is an intricate framework holding a 46” outdoor screen, a computer and encoder.

Back in time

A camera (disguised as the shrimp’s eye) shows the people passing by in front of the installation. The design team worked hard on the UI to create a seamless experience. Turning the wheel takes visitors back in time, from the live feed to video footage of how boats leave the harbour and go fishing during the night. Fun facts and information were added to the video and are available in four languages.
