The underwater world of Planaxis
Tomorrowland
An underwater world doesn’t only exist in fantasy books. For two weekends in July, you could visit the City of Planaxis, an all-new stage at the renowned Tomorrowland festival which we proudly engineered and produced.
Making a splash
Bringing back Tomorrowland’s theme of 2018, the Planaxis stage resembled an underwater world with a giant conch, hubs and lavish fountains that sprung from a lake. Working together closely with Tomorrowland, we engineered the nine smaller hubs and main stage which measures 18 meters in height. The challenge was to build these on the foundations that were erected under the water’s surface and make them waterproof.
Night lights
The main stage was shaped on site at our HQ and composed of several layers that were built on top of each other.
Shimmering in the sunlight during the day, Planaxis really came to life at night when the built-in LEDs turned them into candy-coloured floating islands.
More than 1 kilometre of pixel LEDs were used to light up Planaxis (including the same distance of cabling underneath the water surface!), which translates into more than 92,000 LEDs which were custom-made using the most advanced technology. A technical feat to say the least, including that all power supply could be monitored remotely.
