Beyond The White Cube
Belfius
For the third consecutive year, we collaborated with Belfius Art Gallery on the scenography and production of their annual exhibition, this time for Unlocked – The Art of Possibility. Based on the moods and sketches from Hoet & Hoet, we created the spatial concept and exhibition design, bringing an immersive visitor experience together in co-creation that moved beyond the traditional gallery format.
Before moving into production, we developed a realistic 3D walkthrough of the entire exhibition. This allowed the curatorial and creative teams to experience the space in advance and fine-tune the visitor journey before installation began.
Moving away from the traditional white-cube gallery approach, Unlocked explores a more immersive exhibition language by integrating projection, textiles, LED technology and custom-built interventions throughout the space.
Light, textile, motion
At the entrance, visitors are welcomed by a large-scale videowall composed of 16 screens, delivering ultra-high-resolution visuals at 8000 × 5000 pixels. In front of the videowall, custom LED cubes display bespoke animations, enhanced by a mirrored floor element that reflects and extends the imagery. The video editing and motion graphics of both installations were done by our digital team.
Inside the exhibition, visitors are guided through a textile corridor in soft pink hues, gradually revealing artworks along the way and creating a slower, more intimate transition into the exhibition.
Spatial design
Further into the space, we installed 50 metres of flexible LED tubing that spiral organically around selected artworks, creating an additional visual layer throughout the gallery. Several works are complemented by custom-made pedestals in reflective dibond and wood, while bespoke carpets were developed for specific installations. One of them directly mirrors the colours and patterns of the artwork itself.
Throughout the exhibition, interactive LED cubes add subtle pulses of light and movement to the scenography.
The final space, the so-called black room, features a large-scale wall projection where animated quotes travel dynamically across the surfaces, creating an immersive closing experience for visitors.
