Thinking outside the frame

Belfius

Forget about white walls, here’s an exhibition that makes art literally jump out of its frame. We worked with Socle Studio the bring the current “Art Pops” exhibition at the Belfius Art Gallery to life. Mixing shapework, carpentry, AI generated content, engineering and technical expertise: this was a project where our skills came together.

Designed by Socle Studio, “Art Pops” takes visitors on an immersive experience through selected artworks from the Gallery’s collection. From feeling to smelling and listening, there’s something for all senses to explore. We worked closely with the scenographer to perfect every detail and material chosen – and it shows.

One of our favourite rooms in the gallery is the feather room, in which we installed 2 walls covered with white and green feathers. Our workshop team spent hours carefully applying the feathers one by one on the walls at our HQ, and we finished off the detailing on site to make sure the walls looked immaculate.

The inside shell of the gallery holds two artworks by Peter de Cupere. We produced two custom shapes that hang on top of the works, creating the illusion that the clouds extend into the sky.

Covering three walls, a custom green velvet band serves as a backdrop for artworks linked to a centrepiece by Belgian artist Georges Collignon. We carved 3D shapes that look like an extension of the artwork and covered these with the same material. Fake oranges filled with orange perfume hang from the ceiling in front of the painting.

Another key artwork by Paul Delvaux had to be able to stand on its own. Our engineer drew up a custom steel frame in which the painting could easily be fitted and locked.

In the next room, our content team created a ripple-like projection on a piece by Rinus Van De Velde synced and programmed with music by Jasper Steverlinck. The grand finale is an AI generated projection on a historic work by Henri Bles. Our in-house designer used AI animation tools to recreate the work outside of the canvas, bringing a visually intriguing story. The projection is synced with sound and light to bring even more drama.
